Ah, the control center of my childhood: Cartoon Network. For the first time, I'll be doing a #MyTop5 plus five more! Come along for the ride!
Where do I begin with Cartoon Network? From Ben 10 to Camp Lazlo, it's quite a list to get to. I began watching Cartoon Network when I was only four years old. Believe me, I had plenty of time to just watch TV when I was younger.
Without further ado, let's get to it!
Ed, Edd 'n Eddy
These three had me in tears! This series follows the many hilarious adventures of middle school students in their small neighborhood cul-de-sac. Eddy (de facto leader) always tries to come up with crazy scams to lure the other kids out of their money.
Edd, known as "Double D," is the smart guy in this group. When I was younger, I thought he was such a nerd with his vast vocabulary. However, as the series goes on, we see him come out of his shell. Every now and then, you'll see him angry and sarcastic. Double D is a Taurus because he's not angry unless he's mad.
Ed is the brawn of the group. He's super strong and let's say he's hilarious. You may have seen some of the things on the show, but you can tell he's a great friend. He has a mean little sister named, Sarah and she's downright bratty. Other kids in the show include Jimmy, Rolf, Jonny 2x4, Plank (yes, a piece of wood), and the Kanker Sisters.
Every episode takes them through their summer and even school years. The series ends with a movie. I'm not gonna spoil it, but just know that it's very funny and dramatic.
The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy
Its dark theme is such a nice alternative to all the other cartoons on Cartoon Network. It's one of those shows you'd think you watch on Halloween. The series follows Billy and Mandy as they torment the Grim Reaper after coming to 'own' him after he attempted to take away Billy's pet hamster.
The idea of taking something as harrowing as death itself and turning it into a kid's cartoon is a really good one and works extremely well. The fact that this show could so easily have been chilling really benefits it. If the theme was taken the other way and told darker this show would make a great film.
Like Ed Edd n Eddy, it has funny sound effects. It is a great spin-off of the short-lived Grim & Evil original series, which is even more popular than its sister show, Evil Con Carne, which is also good.
The Jetson
"Meet George Jetson." When I had access to cable, I stumbled upon the Boomerang Channel. If you've ever watched that channel back then, you would find the heart of Cartoon Network, which included this show, alongside The Garfield Show, Looney Tunes, and Pink Panther.
It was something about this show that made me watch it. It tells the many adventures of a family that lives in the future times. When I was young, I was intrigued by what the future would look like. So far, technology has been advancing and we've seen some great developments.
My favorite character on the show is George. He cares for his family and has a funny way of being himself. Other characters include Jane, Elroy, Judy, and the robot maid. Together, they all go through their adventures, which in turn teaches them valuable lessons to learn in life.
You can watch this show on MeTV in your area on Sundays at 11:30 a.m. right after the Flintstones.
The Flintstones
Last but certainly not least is The Flintstones. I always thought of this show as a contrast to what The Jetsons would be like in modern times. What makes the show funny is that some of the objects they use are oftentimes animals. They say a LOT of funny things when they are being used.
The show contains catchphrases that stuck with me since I've grown up. "I've gotta stop eating at those cheap restaurants," had me in tears. It's just something you wouldn't expect anyone to say these days.
My favorite episode is the special crossover episode where The Jetsons meet The Flintstones. Talk about a great storyline and a happy ending. Trust me, it's a lot of action.
You can catch The Flintstones Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on METV right after Saved by The Bell. I am so glad to see this show on METV. Thanks, METV for bringing this show back on, there is a lot of Nostalgia with this show for me and I am sure many other people too.
